NC rotary table for a laser scanning vibrometer

Automated measurement on CFRP parts

For structural health monitoring of cylindrical CFRP structures, I designed and built a numerically controlled rotary table and connected it to the measurement software so that rotation and measurement run automatically.

Fibre composite parts can be damaged inside without any visible sign. For monitoring, waves are sent through the part and measured. On curved parts this requires many measuring positions around the circumference.

  • Setting: research on structural health monitoring, Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg
  • Tools: 3D CAD, stepper motor control, Polytec measurement software

My contribution

  • Design and construction: shaft, bearings, gearing, slip ring
  • Selection and programming of the stepper motor control
  • Connection to the vibrometer software: rotation in defined angular steps, a measurement after each step

Outcome

  • Fully automated measurement cycles around the whole circumference instead of manual repositioning
  • A low-cost setup that can be extended with further axes
