Energy concept for an energy-plus neighbourhood

Simulating demand and generation

How far can a planned residential area cover its own electricity and heat demand? I simulated consumption and generation with high time resolution and compared variants with photovoltaics, storage, combined heat and power, and load shifting.

An energy-plus neighbourhood is meant to generate more energy over the year than it consumes. What matters, however, is how well generation and demand match in time, and an annual balance does not show that.

  • Setting: cooperation with ecovillage hannover eG
  • Methods: time-resolved simulation, scenario comparison

My contribution

  • Demand profiles for electricity, space heating and hot water, for different building types and insulation standards
  • Generation profiles for photovoltaics
  • Scenarios with electricity and heat storage, combined heat and power units, and load shifting
  • Evaluation by self-consumption and grid imports

Outcome

  • A quantitative basis for planning the energy system of the neighbourhood
